Compare plumbing quotes with a scope worksheet

Direct answer

Compare each written job scope, total, VAT treatment and stated price basis. Note whether it is described as fixed, estimated or provisional, then ask about missing details in writing. This worksheet does not judge value or contractor quality.

Different headline totals may cover different work. Mark only what each written quote states, then ask about the differences before choosing.

Compare up to three written quotes

Enter the written totals and mark only items each quote explicitly includes. Entries stay in this browser page; nothing is sent or saved.

Quote A
Items stated as included
Quote B

Quote C (optional)

Method and limitations

Model version: 2026-09-25-v2

  • The total spread is calculated only from the figures you enter. VAT is not added, removed or normalised.
  • The recorded price description is user-selected; this worksheet does not interpret its legal or contractual effect.
  • Scope counts show documented inclusions, not quality, value, legal compliance or suitability.
  • No data leaves this page. Entries are held in the current page, not written to website storage.

Key takeaways

  • Use the same job description for each quote.
  • Record how each document describes its price.
  • Mark an item only when the written quote states it.
  • Keep a written record of the agreed version.

Dated quote-component record

Copy each quote as written. Mark a missing detail as not stated; do not infer VAT, combine unlike totals or treat this record as a price verdict.

Enter what the written quote says

Enter the quoted total in pounds and select its stated VAT treatment. Tick only the items explicitly included in the written quote.

An unticked item means it is not confirmed as included here. It may be excluded or simply unstated; ask the plumber to clarify.

Read differences as questions, not a verdict

The worksheet shows the entered price spread and where the marked scope differs. It does not account for access, urgency, materials, workmanship or site conditions.

A higher or lower figure is not evidence that a quote is fair, unfair or suitable. Ask each business to clarify the same open points.

WaterSafe recommends seeking at least three quotes from qualified plumbers where practical. This is scheme advice, not a legal requirement; the worksheet compares two or three.

WaterSafe advises a written quotation rather than an estimate and expects a fixed written price for most non-emergency work. Record the document’s wording; this tool does not interpret its terms.

An illustrative scope comparison

Illustration only: Quote A’s written scope states parts, labour, testing and aftercare.

Quote B’s written scope states parts and labour but leaves testing and aftercare unconfirmed.

The worksheet would tick only the items each quote confirms and mark the rest unconfirmed, without deciding which is better.

An unconfirmed item may be omitted or simply unstated, so ask which before comparing like scope rather than totals.

Next steps

  1. Ask for unclear items to be confirmed in writing.
  2. Keep the accepted quote and any changes together.
